Drawing Class begins May 2nd, 2023! Class meets Tuesdays from 5-7pm in the Community Room of the Charlotte St. Arts Centre. Enrollment costs $140 + supplies, with supply list being sent out upon enrollment. Enrollment is open to all ages and levels of experience.
Welcome to Tiziana Zevallos’s Introduction to Drawing Class! This hands-on six week class will equip students with a wide range of drawing strategies and will get them ready to start making masterpieces of their own. This course is great for students looking to build general skillsets that can be transferred to all sorts of arts and drawing styles. Students will use pen or pencil on paper as their medium and will leave each class with a new piece of work in their portfolios.
Each lesson will start with a short intro to drawing theory followed by exercises and time to apply what they’ve learned directly onto works of their own. Topics of study will include lighting, general composition, and perspective theories. The class will focus on developing skills in drawing features and elements that help bring portraits to life, such as posture/ eye and facial expressions. Once the six weeks are through the students will have everything they need to step into the world of drawing with confidence and a personal style of their own.
Lesson breakdown:
Lesson 1 - The effect of light. Learn how direct and indirect light affects the shape, texture, and dimensionality of objects. Identify the light sources and their effect on the portrait you would like to draw. Learn how to trace your subject on paper as the first step to drawing your portrait.
Lesson 2 - Perspective. Learn about the different types of perspective, how depth is conveyed, and its effect on the size and placement of forms. Apply the light effects from the previous lesson. Revisit the portrait and identify the elements that will need to be highlighted or shaded to have proper perspective and a realistic feel.
Lesson 3 - Shading. Learn hatching and cross-hatching shading technique. Build on the previous light and perspective knowledge, and apply shading by practicing on exercise models. Then, move to shading your portrait.
Lesson 4 - Fur and hair. Learn about strands, clumping, and waves, and how to use light and shadows to draw convincing fur and hair. Apply this to your portrait drawing.
Lesson 5 - Eyes and expressions. This is what brings animate subjects to life in drawing. Learn light and shading tips and tricks to have your subjects convey emotions through their eyes and facial expressions. Take time to apply this to your portrait.
Lesson 6 - Finalize drawing. Take time to finalize the drawing and showcase it to classmates.
