Pilates & Movement with Zsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady

Morning Pilates at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre focuses on total body muscle engagement. Each session will focus on movements, variations and additional challenges to basic exercises. You will be led to work on balance, flexibility, strength and muscular endurance, using mainly your own body weight.

Writing Horror Fiction with Mike Thorn

This course will engage with horror literature’s legacies and unique capacities for catharsis, allegory, and personal expression. We will discuss what scares us and investigate the psychology  of fear within the context of fiction, digging into the nuts-and-bolts processes of generating fear  in the reader.

Design, carve and print your own linocuts in this relief printmaking course with printmaker Andrew Robinson. Students will learn to use introductory level gouges and inks to create their own works.

Rug Hooking with Katie Hamill

Join yarn lover Katie Hamill on Tuesday nights this winter to learn the craft of rug hooking! Historically rug hooking has ranged from pillows, rugs, runners or wall hangings and modern quilting and borrows from schools such as impressionism, pointillism and realism, blurring the distinction between art and craft.

What Happened to the Ragdoll Cat with Ryan Griffith

This eight week course, led by playwriting veteran Ryan Griffith, will take students through the development of brand new works. The workshop will cover all the basics of developing new ideas and more advanced skills for when it comes time to get your ideas on to the page. The class will culminate in a public reading where the new scripts will be showcased for the general public on the CSAC auditorium stage.

Oil Painting with Hayley Monroe

This class is for anyone interested in exploring the world of oil painting for the first time. Though still life and landscape, you will explore basic brush techniques, colour theory and mixing, and a variety of ways to work this exciting medium on canvas.

Required Materials: Students are asked to bring two brushes (#2 angle and a #4 bright), a 9x12 canvas pad, a palette paper pad, and an apron. Paint will be provided.

Telling Stories in Gouache and Watercolour with Eva Christensen

Our first class with artist Eva Christensen will focus on telling personal stories through gouache and watercolour. Core topics include composition, looking to art history for inspiration, instruction in gouache painting, group critique, varnishing and mounting paintings on wood panel and more. Participants will use their own personal photos as the foundation for this program.

Embracing Spontaneity in Your Creative Process.

Some of the best ideas are the ones that just happen, unexpectedly. These unplanned magical moments can sometimes become what defines our work as artists. But only if we know how to recognize them when they occur. In her upcoming workshop, Embracing Spontaneity in Your Creative Process, multidisciplinary artist Gill Salmon will highlight the important role spontaneity can play in the development and delivery of any creative project.

Queer Zines: History and Construction

Join multi-disciplinary, self taught artist Aaron Beaumont (they/them) for a workshop on queer zines, open to folks in the 2SLGBTQ+ community. This workshop will cover 2SLGBTQ+ zines and history, zine formatting styles and zine creation including writing, collage and mixed media. This workshop is for beginners and zinemakers alike, it is an opportunity to create in community together, whether your zine is explicitly about queerness or not. Materials provided. Masks required and provided.

Paint & sip with emily chase

We're hosting another Paint & Sip Night in the community room on Friday January 31.

Join host facilitator Emily Chase for an evening of painting and conversation with friends old and new. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and soft music as Emily guides you and your friends in creating your own unique painting based on a seasonal theme.

Each ticket includes a complimentary beverage of choice. Non-alcoholic options available. All materials provided.

Painting Landscapes in Watercolour

Jane Guerts returns with her first class of our 2025 season. After fielding several requests for the topic, Jane has put together a class for beginner/intermediate painters focused specifically on capturing landscapes. From layering an image to shadows and detail, let Jane show you how to take your painting practice in new directions and help you prepare for getting the most out of your spring, summer, and fall painting. Maybe even winter too!

Branch Out and Weave for Climate Change Workshop

The goal of the Branch Out and Weave for Climate Change workshop is to bring awareness of climate change through the weaving process, group discussions, and identification of next steps to a hopeful future by committing to one small act in their lives and in their communities. Participants will use a branch as a weaving loom and will weave between the “arms” of the branches. Weaving is a reflective process and can be very meditative. The process of weaving also presents opportunities for open discussions.

Bodhran: Basic Skills and Rhythms

Join Matt Carter for a two-hour deep dive into Irish jigs and reels. This beginner class will cover basic playing techniques and variations and break down Celtic music’s many rhythms in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Students must have their own instrument to participate.

Acrylic Painting with Pascal Leo Cormier

Learn acrylic painting techniques with artist Pascal Leo Cormier and break through your creative barriers! With a focus on color theory, composition, various techniques and approaches to still life’s, portraits and landscapes, participants will discover new ways to think about painting and introduce new creative ideas into their practice. Perfect for advanced beginner and intermediate artists.

Workshops are open to people of ALL abilities!
