Fredericton Arts & Learning, Inc is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, facilitates a variety of arts presentations, organizes yearly free arts-based educational outreach programming (ArtReach) and funds the annual Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts.
Fredericton Arts & Learning is run by a volunteer Board of Directors, which includes a fair representation of individuals from varying business, arts and multicultural communities. The board also has representation from the municipal and provincial levels.
Fredericton Arts & Learning, Inc was founded and incorporated in 2001 and became a registered charity in 2002. The purpose for the establishment of the organization was to work to meet the community’s need for an arts centre and for more arts programming. FAL officially took ownership of the Charlotte Street School in 2004, renaming it the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, after 2-3 years of planning and fundraising.
As an arts organization situated in the Capital Region, Fredericton Arts & Learning, Inc (FAL) facilitates the development of arts and culture locally, provincially, nationally and internationally through our fundamental services and presentation programs:
- Charlotte Street Arts Centre facility

In only five years, since its doors first opened, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre has become a focal point for creation, presentation and education in the arts, and an integral part of the Fredericton community.
The Centre is operated by Fredericton Arts & Learning, a nonprofit registered charity headed by an active volunteer board. It has run debt-free and fully rented from the beginning. This is a significant accomplishment, as the 1884 school needed more than $1 million in renovations just to make it habitable.
"The Charlotte Street Arts Centre opens the doors of creative expression to all."
It’s our vision statement, but we can’t quite do it yet. The architects who designed the building in 1884 and the "new" addition in 1917 weren’t conscious of the need to have space accessible to everyone. People with mobility challenges are not able to get around the centre easily.
Plans call for a full-sized elevator, meaning we need an addition at the rear of the building. The addition will also provide appropriate storage space for our piano, a new (and level) stage with storage under it, air conditioning, appropriate wheelchair parking, new universal access washrooms, additional offices to meet demand for space, and a new entrance to the auditorium area. These necessary improvements will take a roughly $1 million to accomplish.
You can help make this happen.
